The disks of our PCs and laptops are no less than a box of Pandora. Before we realize, the disks get full of files that are obsolete or no longer required. Then we have to sit down, spend some good amount of time to clear the space for important files and documents. It will be easier if we can see the disk usage at one glance and decide what can be removed. You can do so with the help of Filelight app. You can now see your disk usage statistics with the help of the visually user-friendly applications. Here is a small write-up on this application.
What is Filelight application
Filelight is a free Disk Space Analyzer software for Windows 10 available on Microsoft Store. This application helps you visualize the disk usage statistics. The statistic represented in the ‘sunburst’ form allows you to quickly understand exactly where your disk space is being used.
The disk usage statistics is displayed graphically as a set of concentric segmented-rings. You can use it to locate hotspots of disk usage and then make changes to those areas using a file manager.
The size of this application is approximately 180MB. Once downloaded, you can pin this application to the Task Bar or Start Menu. You can then see the icon of the Filelight application.
Using Filelight app to see the disk usage statistics
Click on the Filelight icon to launch it. When you open the application, you can see donut pie charts for each of the drives on your PC or laptop.
To see detailed disk usage statistics, click on each of the pie charts. The application starts scanning all the files on your system and comes up with the following ‘sunburst’ form of the graphic display.
Please note that it takes a while to scan all the files on your PC and render the graphical disk usage statistics. This time depends on the number of files present on your disk.
To know which files are taking up your disk, hover over each of the colors and see the details regarding the selected drive. For example, in the above image, the pink part shows the disk space of Program Files on C Drive. It also displays the number of files this drive consists of and the share of the Program Files on the total disk space on your PC. It also displays the major file names inside the Program files in the form of spikes. If you hover over each of these spikes, you will get more information about each folder inside Program Files.
You can further click on each of these spikes to see more details within that folder. Thus, you can analyze even the smallest of the folders using this application.
Tabs within the Filelight application
Besides viewing the disk usage statistics, you can also see various tabs at the top of the window, such as Scan, View, Go, Settings and Help.
Click on the Scan tab to scan a particular folder, Home folder, Root Folder or rescan already scanned folders or drives.
Click View to zoom in or out of the resultant graphic of the disk usage statistics.
Once the graphical disk usage statistics are rendered, you can click on each part of this graphic to see the details. You can go back and forth of the results using Up, Back and Forward options in the Go tab.
The Setting tab lets you select the tabs on Toolbar, Configure Shortcuts, Configure Toolbar and Configure Filelight application. If you wish to skip some of the folders from scanning, click the Configure Filelight option in the Settings tab. Then select the Scanning tab. Click the Add button and select the folder you don’t wish to be scanned.
You can also remove the folder from this list. In the Settings window, you can also change the Appearance of the Filelight application. Click Reset to remove the changes made by you under the Settings tab.
This application is user-friendly and intuitive. The graphical representation of the disk usage statistics is unique and has a good look-and-feel.
Download this application from Microsoft Store and let us know your view on the same.
